Retro Blues Alive

Last year The Blues Alive Festival celebrated the tenth anniversary and because we think we may celebrate a little longer, we have decided to give the celebration one day more. We had behind us a decade of concerts of many excellent musicians form our country and also from abroad. Although the festival dramaturgy tries not to repeat itself and if possible to present always new faces, this time, thanks to the calendar that makes it possible to have Blues Alive one day longer, we could afford to set together one evening, which is only retrospective.

Hoochie Coochie Band and guests

This band from Brno, which has played perhaps most often at Blues Alive festivals, though you may find their name in the posters of three years only: 1999, 2001 and 2005. The quartet, led by a guitarist and singer Jan Švihálek, belongs to busy attendants at all Šumperk blues activities and there is never need to persuade them to night jamming. Then it was easy to decide who will be the sort of "home band", which would accompany the other Czech blues stars from the last years of the Blues Alive Festival.
And who did the Hoochie Coochie Band decide to invite as their guests? There is no need to introduce Marek Hlavica to regular visitors - he was a moderator at most festival years and he is its inseparable part. He performed here as an excellent singer and harp player for the first time v 1998 as a leader of his band Žáha, two years later he played  together with one-time brought to life trio Tucet and in 2003 he appeared again with Žáha just before the main star of the year, Chris Thomas King.
The guitarist Marcel Flemr and the singer Hanka Říhová made their presence felt in 2002 at Blues Aperitiv as members of the band Buddy Wonders. They won and the same year they played in the lobby at Blues Alive. A year later - already with a new rhythm section and under the name of Roadcasters - they were given the block on the main stage. The artistically inseparable couple has been together to the present day: They naturally crossed the borderline of orthodox blues towards owns guitar songs in the band Grape. Besides that, Marcel is also involved in the reggae project Mr.Cocoman and he is popular as a sideman (for example Roman Pokorný, Rene Trossman). This autumn he is going to start his own Marc' Flemr Blues Band.
The Scottish guitarist and singer Stan The Man, settled in Prague, belongs to the greatest stars of the local blues scene. If the bluesmen were given the award for the most hardworking musician, he would definitely be the winner. Stan The Man performed at the Blues Alive in 2000 in the fifth year, and the second time three years later together with the singer Betty S. By all means, he was also noticeable as an unofficial guest last year, when his big dream came true, playing together with Hubert Sumlin at midnight jam session. Mira Kašpar is another product of Blues Aperitiv in sphere of this festival. He pleased the jury as a leader of Walkin' Blues Band with his spontaneity, grace and original repertoire in 2001, the same year he had its first night in face of Blues Alive audience in the lobby and one year later on the main stage. Since then "Mireček " counts among the most active attendants and mainly jammers of all (but not only) Šumperk blues activities. Walkin' Blues Band though is today just a history. Nowadays Kašpar can be seen as a leader of two bands: classical blues(rock) trio Many More Experience Band and the group United Cans Unlimited, modernizing the legacy of Delta Blues with the electronically- psychedelic sound.
One Interesting thing, somewhat getting out of the original assignment to present together those musicians that played at Blues Alive in the last years, will be the partnership of Hoochie Coochie Band with a hip hop formation Minuta Ticha from Brno. This group is now a part-time job for Jan Švihálek. We can suppose that their performance will throw down the gauntlet to the blues fundamentalists. However, such a nudge is an essential part of the festival striving to open up its programme to "all that is related to all".

Bluesweiser and guests

The Slovak blues scene is usually represented by more than one formation at Blues Alive each year. Not because the festival dramaturgy tends to cry over spilt milk of the former federation, but simply because the blues community of our eastern neighbour is artistically very prolific and their language is has been always the closest one to ours. The band Bluesweiser of Juraj Turtev has been chosen as the "home band" for this year's retro Blues Alive. Not only because it ranks among the best Slovak blues bands, but also it is obviously the most flexible one in style. Juraj Turtev already played for the first time at the third year of the festival in 1998, then not until five years later. Furthermore, Juraj Turtev could be heard in 2000 as a frontman of his next band, Dura & Blues Club and last year he was one of the protagonists in the jugband Veteráni zo Salon Dore. This year the guests of Bluesweiser will be literally a charming ride of Slovak blues scene: each of them is at the top. Erich Boboš Procházka is the most obvious one as the best harp player in Slovakia. For the first time he visited Šumperk festival as a frontman of the Electric Blues Band as early as in 1997, in the second year. A year later he played with Ján Litecký Šveda and in 2001 he brought his own band Frozen Dozen, where he has been playing up to the present day.
The singer Silvia Josifoska is regarded as a main personality of blues and jazz scenes in Slovakia. Her performance with Bluesweiser will be actually the second one on the Šumperk stage , they first appeared here together in 1998. Then she presented her own project in the seventh year in 2002.
Jan Litecký Šveda is of sort of godfather of Slovak blue scene - no wonder he is an honorary president of the Slovak Blues Association - and his aspect to the deepest roots of the Delta Blues is far and near unheard of. He played with his band Víťazný Traktor at Blues Alive twice, in 1998 and 2004. On the top of it, last year he was a leader of the jugband Veteráni zo Salon Dore.
Noro Červenák, the leader of the band ZVA 12 - 28 from Zvolen, is undoubtedly the most original Slovak bluesman, especially as for his enjoyment of music, but also for authorial style. Although his band without doubt ranks among the absolute European top, he played at Blues Alive only once, in 2002, which just goes to show that the festival dramaturgy finds it difficult to choose from so many artists year by year. Perhaps this year's Retro Blues Alive will help us pay off the biggest debts in this respect.

Michael Roach

As a foreign guest of the Retro Blues Alive we have chosen the guitarist, harp player and singer, Michael Roach. His performance in the fourth year in 1999 is still fresh in the minds of regular concert-goers. As a matter of fact, he was one of the very first musicians, coming from the blues homeland to this festival and as for the style that he presented, he has been unrivalled for the whole decade of the festival. Roach is namely one of the best representatives of the so - called Piedmont blues, the style that is typical for Eastern coast of the United States. Born in Washington out of thirteen children, he learnt to play the guitar directly under the supervision of the star colleagues John Jackson and John Cephas. His time is divided between his active music and running workshops and teaching the history of Afro-American culture, especially blues music. He has given lectures also at a many significant schools, such as American Smithsonian Institute or British Oxford College. However, he has travelled with his guitar to the letter the whole world and demonstrated that the music, rooted in the 20s of the last century, has not lost anything of its magic and persistence.

More or less the students and graduates of Svitavy Gymnasium are the members of the singing choir Iuventus, which was founded in 1988. Since then it has travelled a lot in European countries, including UK, Ireland, France Italy or Spain. It has released four solo albums and its programme includes classical compositions as well as spirituals and gospels. This part will be presented to the audience of Blues Alive at the traditional church concert. The black spiritual music, which is a sort of the other side of blues, will definitely enrich the festival programme.

Teenage Beat

This year the jury of the Blues Aperitiv as one man decided to let this Polish band to move on to the main festival. They made a comment that such professional performance should not have taken part in the competition. The Main garnish of this band, playing together for three years, is one of the most respected harp player Lukasz Rumpel. The band is focused first of all to Californian West Coast blues, marginally also to Chicago sound. They play the compositions by William Clark, Rod Piazza, but also by Little Walter or Muddy Waters.

Women Blues Band

Polish acoustic trio is now at the beginning of the journey, but the jury of the Blues Aperitiv was deeply touched not only by the peculiar girl line-up, but namely their spontaneity and pureness of their performance, the interesting compositions and unusual versions of blues and soul standards. An interesting future is undoubtedly awaiting these ladies.

Strašidelný elektrik band

One of the winners at the Blues Aperitiv last year, bluesrock group Strašidelný elektrik band from Prague, drew the attention of the international jury by the eccentric repertory of the group leader Petr "Bubák" Bublák, and his distinctive singing. Bublák is not a new face for the regular concertgoers to Blues Alive - two years ago he played a solo guitar in the formation of a songwriter Jakub Noha. As the band achieved acknowledgement in the lobby last year, they advanced to the main stage this year.

Petra Börnerová Band feat. Zsolt Benkö

An interesting and more and more popular project of the singer Petra Börnerová (ex-Hand's Free Blues Band), the Slovak drummer Tomáš Bobrovniczký (ex-Bluesweiser, ZVA 12-28 Band, Roadcasters etc.) and a few Hungarian musicians led by an excellent guitarist Zsolt Benkö. The band has found their face in the original rendering of classic standards as well as the cover versions of less known world compositions. Not only the presence, but also the future of the band is worth our increasing attention.

Paul Casey

The song writer Paul Casey is today considered great white hope of Irish music scene. He displays an exceptional command of slide guitar and his song writing and distinctive voice are causing quite a stir both sides of the Atlantic, where he toured and where he was compared to David Gray, JJ Cale and Damien Rice. In truth, however, Paul Casey is an individual who makes up his own rules and carves his own niche when song-writing and recording. He unravels modern guitar styles with upbeat grooves and samples, while never straying from rootsy rhythms and sounds. Whether fusing infectious riffs with intricate Irish rhythms or drawing on musical snapshots of legendary guitarists, Casey has continued to create a unique and distinctive sound. Paul released his first album Open Tuning in September 2005 and its radio single 'Something's Gotta Give' has been picking up airplay across Ireland and in the US. This April Chris Rea invited Paul to play at his big British tour. In the past, the members of Paul's band have performed with artists such as Van Morrison Sinead O'Connor, Chieftains, Dr. John or Tom Jones.

Phil Guy Blues Band Feat. Bruce Feiner

Yes there is the relation: Phil Guy is really a younger brother of today obviously the most famous active blues guitarist, Buddy Guy! Both brothers were born in Louisiana and both started playing in the band of a local star, harp player Raful Neal ( the world - famous Kenny Neal's father). Today sixty-six-year old Phil Guy moved to his brother to Chicago in 1969. Soon after his arrival in Chicago, Buddy invited Phil to join his band and they toured a lot. Phil plays along with Buddy in studios up to this day. Phil's style is somewhat different from Buddy's for his modernity and inclination to funky rhythms, so it was easy on the ear of other blues giants such as Junior Wells, Son Seals, Koko Taylor, Memphis Slim, Rod Piazz or Johnny Rawls ( you may remember his from the last year of the Blues Alive), who have invited him to the their concert bands or studios. Concurrently Phil Guy goes in for his personal career as a leader and he makes albums with the famous labels Delmark or JSP. Recently he has cooperated with the famous blues producer Bruce Feiner, who has produced for example albums by Bernard Allison or Lucky Peterson. Feiner will also be a special guest as an organist and saxophone - player at this outstanding concert.

Studebaker John

Studebaker John Grimaldi was born in an Italian section of Chicago and started playing harp at age 7. Under the spell of music he heard on Maxwell Street, Chicago's famed blues melting pot, Grimaldi began performing as Studebaker John and the Hawks in the '70s. John began playing slide guitar after a life-changing experience of seeing Hound Dog Taylor , one of the most important personalities of the Chicago scene of '60s and '70s. He has reached the peak and today his diary is full a long time ahead. He has made a number of albums, four of them released on Blind Pig Records. His last record, Self-Made Man, was released on the Label Avanti this spring. As a songwriter and musician, Studebaker John is coming to Šumperk as a major creative force in the world of the Chicago Blues today. Ahead of the pack, with vision and foresight, creating a new standard and landscape for this music's future.

Atlantic Cable

Canadian-born Tyson Cosby , who resides in Prague now, used to play blues and post rock with the band Squall in a many clubs. Now he calls himself Atlantic Cable and he has released a debut full-length CD Darwin Avenue (Starcastic).This solo project is inspired by all traditional styles but it still remains unique. Cosby owns something we can only be jealous of. Something that is typical for the musicians mainly from the American continent - no matter what they play, they have deeply rooted music history inside and they are not shy to use it. Atlantic Cable may count among the contemporary lo-fi songwriters, but the essence of his music is related to the approach so typical for Berlin Australians. Namely Hugo Race can cross your mind. He similarly works with dark shadows of Charley Patton and Son House as well as the decadent atmosphere of Kurt Weill of psychedelic moods. ( review in the magazine UNI)

Jarda Traband Svoboda

In first five years of this decade Traband was an extremely successful band, playing specific style "dechno" more or less narrative tales about all sorts of life drop-outs - it often was, regardless of the style, real blues. Surprisingly, last year the author Jarda Svoboda set forth a pause of indeterminate time - the reason was the eternal dissatisfaction and the effort to try it again otherwise, typical for highly inventive personalities. Except for couple of slight exceptions Svoboda has been truly having a rest in the last year. His appearance at Blues Alive will be the first occasion to take in his new programme, which is at the time of writing this bulletin yet kept underhand. But one thing is for sure: the well - known multi-instrumentalist (guitar, clarinet, accordion etc.) Svoboda has chosen as his main instrument the one least expected: harmonium. Let us be surprised.

Phil Shöenfelt and Pavel Cingl

English rocker Phil Shöenfelt, living in Prague for many years, is of course known to everybody, who is interested in what happens at the home scene. In the context of Blues Alive we can recall his performance in 2003 as a member of the international band Fatal Shore, which was received with favourable response. This time he is coming for the first time just himself in a more subtle line, only with the violinist of his band Pavel Cingl. Since Phil is a rocker deep inside and he often admits his relation to American Delta Blues, we definitely cannot expect some toothless folk...

Five years ago the guitarist Víťa Marek and pianist Honza Havrda met at the festival in Ziebica in Poland and they decided to start this band. This year Dr. B.Lues played for the frenetic audience of Blues Aperitiv and pleased the jury with a fresh look at the American classic blues and with the energy that they managed to pass on to the audience. The band has tried playing not only in Hradec Králové area, where it is based, but also at concerts in Czech Republic and Poland, where blues music has always been accepted very well.

Easy Street

The living proof how Blues Alive wipes and broadens its borders is the participation of this Polish duo, which won through to the Festival from Blues Aperitiv 2005. The couple playing the guitar and the harp focuses to country blues standards. The jury appreciated especially their authentic and instrumentally faultless rendering, which can be compared with the overseas originals. After two blocks in the lobby the duo is privileged to step on the main stage this year.

Snake Eaters

It might begin like in a fairy tale, Once Upon A Time: I has been a long time since American Bradley Stratton lived in Prague and toured the whole country with his bands Cirkus Praha a Snake Eaters. But Stratton has left the traces at the Czech music scene, which are still visible and many people remember him up to the present day. And not only remember - Whenever he comes from his overseas home to visit the Czech Republic and occasionally calls together his former partners for a gig, you can be sure of a great night with a wild party afterwards. The festival dramaturgy has been trying to invite Snake Eaters for several years as they feel the experience potential in their music that definitely falls into this event. We managed to do so this year. We are looking forward to Brad arriving and we hope you are, too.

Bonzo & The Resonators

Peter "Bonzo" Radványi is a veteran of Slovak blues scene, singer and slide guitar player (resonator guitar). He has experienced with different styles in his music life, but blues is his greatest love. Šumperk audience surely remember him as a member of the bluesrock band Mother-In-Law, which played here in 1999. His contemporary project is based on resonator guitar and Bonzo's rough singing - both were warmly accepted at the blues festival in the island of Taiwan last year, so he is the Slovak bluesman with the most exotic playing experience. Although Bonzo & The Resonators offer the insights into deep Blues history, they have one unique element: solos of the guitarist Ivan Tomovič, known from Turtev's Bluesweiser. The contrast between Bonzo's fundamental authenticity and Tomovič's modern, sometimes Martian style, makes the band really unique. Do not miss the opportunity.

Nocna zmiana bluesa & Slawek Wierzcholski

" For the first time I saw the band Nocna zmiana bluesa with outstanding Slawek Wierzcholski in Malostranská Beseda club in the late '80s - nobody knew them then. Anyway, I bought a CD full of wonderful and fully acoustic covers of blues standards and it was one of my most favourite blues records for many years. Some time later I went to Poland to visit the local blues festival and I found out that Slawek was a great and highly respected star there. The organizers almost bowed to him everywhere he appeared." Remembers Onřej Bezr, the festival dramaturge. This phenomenal harp player and singer is today really the most popular bluesman in Poland and he is also very well-known abroad. Slawek is also a festival dramaturge and a contributor to Poland's blues magazine "Twój blues". This year Blues Alive offers four bands coming from our northern neighbours. There is no doubt about the high quality of all of them, but Nocna zmiana bluesa will definitely be the star turn of the Polish troops.

Bob Margolin

Bob Margolin is a highly respected blues guitar player, carrying on the deep Chicago blues style and creating his original music today. From 1973-1980, Bob played guitar in the band of Chicago Blues legend Muddy Waters, touring worldwide and recording also his famous comeback albums Hard Again, I'm Ready, King Bee a Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live, produced by Johnny Winter.
He also recorded with Winter himself on his albums Nothin' But The Blues and Scorchin' Blues. Bob has also appeared as a guitarist on dozens of blues albums, such as Nighthawks, Junior Wells or Ann Rabson, well known from the Blues Alive stage.
After leaving Waters's band, Bob started his own formation and after a couple of not very successful years he signed a contract with the Chicago label Alligator, where he became their tower of strength. Four albums released there, Down In The Alley (1993), My Blues And My Guitar (1995), Up And In (1997) a Hold Me To It (1999), ranks among the best of white blues from the '90s. His latest is The Bob Margolin All-Star Blues Jam, ,his first record on the label Telarc Records, where he invited his former partners from Waters's band and other blues classics of the old school. This album was nominated for a 2004 W.C. Handy Award for "Traditional Blues Album of the Year. It features the pianist Pinetop Perkins, the harp player Carey Bell, the drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, and the guitarist Hubert Sumlin as "The Bob Margolin All-Star Band". The review reads: "The album has three interconnected parts: studio jammming, live recordings and jamming at home . All of them have two fundamental features - certainty and peace. These musicians do not have to persuade themselves, their colleagues or listeners about that the fact they can play and feel blues. They themselves are blues and their music has nothing to do with musician textbooks... Everybody, who at least from distance watches the development of each of these musicians, knows that they have come to this way of expression, they have grown up to it. Otherwise: In order to play slowly now, they had to run fast for years before. Most recordings are in a whole band set, except for two greatest specialities- home-made recordings. According to the booklet, they were made in half an hour in Bob Margolin's house in North Carolina, where he put up Hubert Sumlin after a concert. The landlord put his home studio into operation, then he lent his rare guest one of his acoustic guitars and as a whole thirteen minutes of concentrated blues beauty was created. The beauty almost unheard of from today's records. "
In other words the cycle is completed. Bob Margolin, the main star of Blues Alive 2006 is greeting Hubert Sumlin, who was in the same position last year.

Veteráni zo Salon Dore

The occasional formation of Juraj Turtev and Ján Litecký Švéda is coming back after last year's successful performance at the afternoon jugband session and a couple of satellite concerts. It is coming to bring blues back where it belongs: to jailhouse. What else to add?

The band Bluesberg from Olomouc has been to the final of Blues Aperitiv several times, but in the end they have always had bad luck. But this year the audience has decided their winner - Bluesberg are advancing to Blues Alive Festival. We like what they have written in their home webpage: "At the beginning we told ourselves - we are going to play only our own songs and we are going to sing only Czech. " The band following up with the best tradition of Czech bluesrock, embodied by e.g. Vladimír Mišík or Ivan Hlas, will not definitely disappoint their fans.

The group coming through various variations has been active at the Blues scene since 2004. Two founder member Georges Jacques and Martin Král'ovský together with other band members cross over classical Blues enriched only by the saxophone, through nine-member band with the percussion and the keyboard, to today's funky-blues, in a stable seven-member set - up. Bluestouch today is a young European band playing energetic funky- blues interwoven by Slovak lyrics, excellent transcription and wind trio led by a French tenor - saxophone - player, all supported by a perfect Czech rhythm section.
